At New Peckham Mosque – Sheikh Nazim al-Qubrusi, led by ICMG UK Peckham Branch, we serve as a centre of worship, education, guidance, community life and social responsibility. Through our departments and committees, including Education, Religious Guidance, Youth, Women’s Branch, Women’s Youth, Kids Club, Humanitarian Aid, Hajj and Umrah, Communications, Culture and Arts, and other supporting units, we provide services for children, young people, families, adults and the wider community.

Education is one of the central pillars of our work. We offer nursery, preparatory and foundational education for children, Qur’ān and Ḥifz programmes, Turkish and Arabic language learning, adult education, Islamic studies, youth development and imam-training pathways. These programmes aim to nurture faith, character, Islamic identity, confidence and responsibility.

Our mosque also provides youth activities, leadership training, sports, seminars, women’s programmes, women’s youth activities and Kids Club sessions. For adults and families, we organise conferences, courses and weekly Islamic reminders, including Erkam Sermons every Wednesday at 7:00 PM. With facilities such as a conference room, kitchen, library and youth room, the mosque serves as a welcoming space for prayer, learning, reflection and community connection.

We provide essential religious and community services, including Nikāḥ ceremonies conducted according to the principles of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, UQBAH funeral assistance, Janāzah arrangements, Hajj and Umrah guidance, Ramadan iftars and the traditional Friday soup service. Through Visit My Mosque Day, we also welcome neighbours, schools and visitors of all backgrounds to discover our Islamic community, heritage, hospitality and shared values.

Beyond local services, we work with donors and volunteers to support humanitarian and charitable projects, including water wells, Qurban, health support, emergency relief, education and orphan aid. Through all these efforts, New Peckham Mosque strives to strengthen faith, families and community life while serving Muslims, our neighbours and humanity as a whole.

WHO WE ARE?

We are a a faith-based community and civil society organization that provides religious, social, and cultural services. Our mission is to support the learning, practice, transmission, and representation of Islam, ensuring that our principles are reflected in daily life. Politically and financially independent, we represent Muslims in religious, social, and cultural matters, addresses their concerns, and works to safeguard their fundamental rights.

The Qur’ān and the Sunnah are form the foundation of our's understanding of Islam. In this view, Islam is not confined to the mosque but embraces every dimension of individual and communal life. Therefore, we believe that it calls believers to moral values, as well as to personal and collective responsibility. Beside, we do not regard Islam as bound to any one region or cultural tradition but as a universal faith lived by the principles of ʾAhl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah, and guided by the Qur’ān, the Sunnah, the understanding of the recognised Fuqahāʾ, and the established principles of Islamic scholarship, including Ijmāʿ and Qiyās.

MOSQUE HISTORY

OUR HISTORY

New Peckham Mosque-Sheikh Nazim al-Qubrusi, formerly St Markʾs Church, is a Grade II listed heritage building. It was first listed on 30 June 1954, which means it is officially recognised in England for special architectural or historic interest. The original church was built in 1879–1880 and designed by the well-known Victorian architect Richard Norman Shaw. It was built in red brick with stone dressings, in a Gothic Revival / Perpendicular-influenced style. The building was not fully completed in its present form until 1931–1932, when the western end was completed by Victor Heal. Historic England also notes that some additions to the eastern end from 1883 were later removed after bomb damage, which connects the buildingʾs story to wartime damage in London. The church closed for Christian worship in 1965. According to local historical sources, the parish was then united with St Philip & St Mark, Avondale Square. After a period of different uses, the building was purchased and converted into a mosque.

After serving as a church for many decades, the building was later purchased around 1980 under the leadership of Mawlana Sheikh Nazim Al-Haqqani Al-Qubrusi and established as New Peckham Mosque in the early 1980s. Today, under the leadership of ICMG UK Peckham Branch, it continues its sacred purpose as a place of worship, learning, guidance, and community service.

Yes. New Peckham Mosque – Sheikh Nazim al-Qubrusi can be visited during its opening hours and prayer times. Individuals are welcome to visit the mosque during these times. However, if you are visiting as part of an organisation, school or group, please contact the mosque management team in advance to arrange your visit.

Although most of our imams are Turkish-speaking, the Jumu‘ah khutbahs and pre-khutbah sermons are delivered in both Turkish and English, so that our wider congregation can benefit from the reminders and guidance.

The daily prayers and Jumu‘ah prayers at New Peckham Mosque are led and performed according to the Ḥanafī school of law. This reflects the mosque’s established practice and the religious tradition followed by its congregation.

No. New Peckham Mosque – Sheikh Nazim al-Qubrusi and ICMG UK Peckham Branch are not separate bodies in terms of management and operation. They are the same body, serving the community under the same leadership, management and organisational structure.

Our understanding of Islam is based on the Qur’ān and the Sunnah, within the principles of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah. We are also guided by the recognised Islamic scholarly tradition, including the understanding of the Fuqahāʾ and the established principles of Ijmāʿ and Qiyās.

Yes. The mosque may be booked for private events or ceremonies, provided that the nature of the event is in accordance with the principles of ʾAhl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamāʿah and the values of the mosque. All booking requests should be discussed directly with the mosque management.
